Wimborne Chess Club has begun to run its own Junior Chess Club from September 2023
Winter Term - January to Easter 2024
Here is what we intend to teach during the Winter term .
1- Annotation -
Algebraic Notation is the method to record games against opponents. This becomes mandatory when people begin to play at Club or County level .
It is a simple and universal method understood by all Chess Players around the World
Algebraic Notation is combination letters and numbers used to describe the pieces movements in relation to their board position
I.e Re1 R = Rook ( castle ) to e1 square , Qc6+ Queen to C6 square , + = check
The players shall record their moves on a score sheet that will be provided
Players shall be tutored to use the score sheet in context of their moves on the board . Examples will be shown on the Display Board and pupils will be measured by their ability to record the moves on the board . The task is relatively simple .
2- Clock usage
In order to progress to match standard play , the pupils are required to use a Chess clock. This serves 2 purposes , 1- to ensure Games finish in a timely fashion 2- To assist with getting enough results to establish a players grade / ranking in context of their opponents
A typical game for beginners shall be 10 minutes each with the Results being registered with the Tutors for grading / ranking purposes .
Both players should depress their clock buttons after they move a piece.
3- Ladder Tournament - from 13th January
There will be 2 Groups of players . The sections are based on our initial understanding of the players ability , namely Senior and Junior , not necessarily age related , but normally so.
Players may go between the 2 groups if they improve .
Each game shall be 10 minutes per player , players will be encouraged to record their games.
The results will go towards their initial grading score to be given by Easter 2024
4- Other stuff
Weekly Puzzles , Tactics and strategy sessions , Hand & Brain + other Chess learning aids.
